This coin combines so many highlights that it deserves the title of 'milestone of modern numismatics'. It is dedicated to the Egyptian labyrinth, reconstructed by the polymath Athanasius Kircher.
When the Egyptian labyrinth in the Fayyum basin was excavated around 1900, not much was left of it as it was used as a quarry during the Roman times. Originally, it was the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Amenemhat III, and is said to have included several thousand rooms. The maze was described by the Greek geographer Herodotus and was already considered an architectural wonder of the world in ancient times. Athanasius Kircher (1602 - 1680), who also dug up hieroglyphs, devoted himself to the fascinating task of reconstructing the shape of the labyrinth based on descriptions. This coin's design takes up Kircher's work with an unmatched level of detail. Thanks to the Smartminting technology, a frame consisting of various chambers was minted on the coin, which becomes increasingly deeper towards the center of the coin and finally turns into a true tiny micro labyrinth. Furthermore, the included boxes are a special feature themselves, because each of the 999 boxes shows a particular part of this mystic maze. If one puts the unique collector pieces together properly, a complete image is created.
