From cave art, to medieval hunts, to modern wildlife conservation, the majestic form of the red deer has coloured and influenced our world. Mongolia captures this iconic creature in gold for your collection.
The mighty red deer is the fourth largest deer species, after moose, elk (or wapiti) and sambar deer. Male red deer can grow to about 250 centimetres long and weigh up to 250 kilograms.
Red deer can found across the globe. Cervus elaphus is native to Europe and Asia and is the only species of deer to be found in Africa. Red deer have been successfully introduced into the North and South Americas, Australia and New Zealand for game and farming purposes. Venison from red deer is higher in protein and lower in fat that either beef or chicken.
Until recently, no distinction was made between the red deer and the elk, also know as wapiti. Partly for this reason, the high numbers of the combined species have rated red deer to be a species of least concern for extinction. Genetic evidence has since proved that the two species are distinctly different.
Red deer stags have massive bone antlers that grow up to an inch a day, starting in the spring and being shed by winter. Red deer antlers have been know to be 115 centimetres long and weigh up to 5 kilograms. The soft velvet covering new antlers is valued and often harvested for Asian holistic medicine.
Red deer fossils have been found dating back 12 million years. They have frequently been depicted in cave art. In medieval times, the red deer, known as a hart, was the most prestigious hunting quarry.
Mongolia brings you the majestic red deer on a 2017 collector’s coin. The deer’s proud image and towering antlers are captured in .9999 gold. The proof coin measures 11mm in diameter, weighs .5 grams and has a mintage of 15,000 pieces. Perfect for the hunter or lover of wildlife, your coin comes presented in its own box with plastic capsule and certificate.
