The highly-detailed portrait depicted on this unique coin honours the late Princess of Wales.
In 1981, Lady Diana Spencer married Charles, Prince of Wales, in what was dubbed the “wedding of the century”. The ceremony took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and was televised and watched by over 750 million people worldwide. The couple had two sons together, Princes William and Harry, before it was announced that their marriage had ended in 1992.
Affectionately referred to as “Princess Di”, the royal won over the hearts of the people and was revered for her generosity, kindness and spirit. Princess Diana used the publicity she received to raise awareness for charities and issues close to her heart. Much of her time was spent talking to people and she immersed herself in many philanthropic projects, including those that sought educate people on health issues as well as outlawing the use of landmines in war.
In 1997, the “People’s Princess” was fatally injured in a car accident that occurred at the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel in Paris. To commemorate her memory, the CIT presents this highly detailed portrait of Princess Diana on a fine gold coin, as a testament to her enduring legacy.
