Tuvalu is a group of islands in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean, which became independent in 1978. The territory consists of nine islands. The Funafuti atoll is the capital. It is assumed that the colonization of these 26 km² large islands began some 2,000 years ago.
The population is currently around 12,200. The economy's most important sectors are agriculture, fishing and seafaring. There is even a special school to train aspiring sailors.

Tuvalu's main problem is global climate change. The highest point of the islands is a mere 5 meters above sea level. Therefore, it is safe to assume that Tuvalu will be completely flooded within the course of the 21st century and disappear from the map. This coin shows the beauty of this threatened island world.

Seahorses are severely threatened, not least due to their use in Chinese medicine. Asians believe crushed seahorses to have healing properties and potency enhancing effects.
