This square coin celebrates Mike Hawthorn’s incredible first Formula One victory in the Ferrari 246 F1 at the French Grand Prix of 1958 and another blazing win for Ferrari.
Just one of the Greatest Victories of Ferrari Collection, this unique silver-plated coin with colour detail commemorates Mike Hawthorn’s first Formula One victory since the Spanish Grand Prix of 1954. Since it also proved to be his last, it is thought to be the highlight of the British racing driver’s career.
Unfortunately his victory was overshadowed by the loss of his teammate Collins who fatally crashed his Ferrari Dino 246 in Nurburgring in the same year. Perhaps feeling unable to enjoy his success with the loss of his close friend, he became disillusioned with the sport and only reluctantly completed the season to become the first British World Champion.
Hawthorn seemed haunted by road incidents; in 1954 he suffered from bad burns to his arms and legs after a crash in a race in Sicily and later lost his father to a road incident. It was also a road accident that claimed is own life when he crashed his Jaguar after skidding on a wet road, aged only 29.
